This sketch, executed in warm and glowing colours on a dark ground, with rapid brushstrokes in which the indiviual strands can be perceived, is one of three produced in 1799 for the three canvases painted for the church of San Fernando in Monte Torrero, Saragossa, founded by Ramón de Pignatelli, who was also the creator of the Aragon Imperial Canal, with which the church was to some extent related. Jovellanos visited the church in April 1801 and referred "admirable works, not so much for their composition as for the power of their "chiaroscuro", the inimitable beauty of their colour and a certain magic of lights and shades that appears to be beyond the reach of any other brush".
