Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

The paintings, which can be dated to 1482, were part of a polyptych. The figures are monumental, an effect heightened by the lowered point of view. The saints are represented in a rocky landscape: Jerome is kneeling before the crucifix, holding the stone with which he beats his breast; Paul holds the sword of his martyrdom and a book, as author of the Epistles.
Notable are the sculptural quality of the characters, the rendering of the faces and details, and the use of light, in which the influence of Giovanni Bellini is evident.
