After John's vision of the Son of Man holding the book with seven seals, a beautiful angel, here shown on the right, calls out "Who is worthy to open the book?" John weeps when he discovers that "no man was able, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth" to open the book. On the left, one of the twenty-four elders comforts John, revealing that the lion of the tribe of Judah, understood as Jesus Christ, will unfasten the seals holding the book closed.
