The sculptor Henrik Douverman worked in Kalkar in the Lower Rhine region, close to the present-day Dutch border. His jewel-like depiction of Saint Margaret emerging from the dragon that had swallowed her was likely made as an object for private devotion. The saint was frequently invoked by pregnant women hoping for a safe and relatively painless delivery.

  • Artist Biography: Douverman probably trained as woodcarver with Dries Holthuis in Kleve around 1506–10. In 1517 he is documented in Kalkar. Only three works can be securely attributed to him based on documentary evidence. His works, which were typical of late Gothic wood sculpture, betray Flemish influences. Unusually, Douvermann occasionally dispensed with polychromy for his works in oak.
