This panel painting was part of the main body of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, Saint John the Evangelist, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It was commissioned by Miguel de Ejea in 1498 for his chapel at the Church of San Pablo, Zaragoza, with the painter Miguel Jimenez de Pareja (Guadalajara) tasked with the work.
The iconography depicts a moment in the life of Saint Martin of Tours when he sliced his cape with a sword so he could share it with a beggar. The background features beautiful, imaginary architecture. A gate in the wall is slightly open, revealing part of a small city.
