Saint Sebastian was a member of the Praetorian Guard under the Roman Emperor Diocletian (245- 313) and secretly a Christian. His beliefs were revealed when he gave support to two Christian officers being tortured. The emperor ordered him shot with arrows, an ordeal he miraculously survived. He was finally clubbed to death in a public arena in Rome. Arrows are symbolic of Sebastian's martyrdom.
