The tablet depicting St. Sigismund travelling to Agauno, a
masterpiece by Agostino di Duccio from Tuscany, is completely foreign to the
Lombard context. It
was originally located on the altar of the chapel dedicated to St. Sigismund in
the Malatesta Temple in Rimini, but was then moved to various locations until
it was acquired by the Accademia di Brera in 1812, and finally deposited at
Castello Sforzesco. The
scene depicted narrates the Saint's journey of atonement to Aguano, where he
founded a monastery. Striking in this bas-relief is the very high quality
reflected in the harmonious rhythm of the lines and in the perspective obtained
through difference in volumes.
