Saint Veronica

Manuel Machado1708 - 1711

Museu de São Roque

Museu de São Roque
Lisboa, Portugal

A 18th-century gilt and polychrome sculpture of Saint Veronica on the left side of the entrance arch, matches with a sculpture of Saint Longuin, on the right side. They represent a new taste in the 18th century, namely the beginning of a theatre-like taste in the decoration of churches in Portugal. In this case, the saint acts like a spectator of the central scene: the Calvary. The sculpture shows a dynamic posture which fits perfectly with the baroque scenery of the Chapel. Veronica displays the white veil with which she wiped Christ’s face when He was carrying his cross on the way to Calvary.
