This vermilion lacquered wine cup has a design of auspicious motifs on its interior surface. The turtles and bamboo are depicted in taka maki-e (high-relief sprinkled metal design), while the Tachibana family crest ‘Gionmamori’ is depicted on the upper left in hira maki-e (flat sprinkled metal design).
It bears inscriptions, 観松斎(Kanshosai)’ with kao (stylized signature) and ‘行年六十三歳 (at the age of 63),’ inside the footring of the cup.
Kanshosai is a pseudonym of Iizuka Toyo who was a maki-e artist employed by the Hachisuka family of the Tokushima domain. The wife of the 10the lord of the domain, Princess Tsute, was a daughter of the 5th lord of the Yanagawa domain. From this background, this cup may have been a gift from the Hachisuka family on a festive occasion of the Tachibana family.
