This is a gorgeous sake cup depicting two turtles with seaweed tails and bamboo on the vermillion lacquer surface in a raised Maki-e design. It shows a three-dimentional picture with sprinkled gold powder. It also has Kanagai metal foil pasted on the turtle shells.
The creator of this sake cup is Jukakusai Hisataka, a Maki-e artist in the end of Edo period who specialized in decorating Inro cases. It is said that he was an official Maki-e craftsman of the shogunate, so that this sake cup may have given from the shogun family.
