A Chinese character ‘壽 (long life)’ is executed in hira maki-e (flat sprinkled metal decoration) on the vermillion lacquered interior surface.
On the exterior, it bears inscriptions which say, “written by Jikan” and “He died at the age of 128.” It is unclear who Jikan was but it is clear that he had a very long life. Therefore, it is assumed that someone, who wanted to live a long life like Jikan, ordered this cup to be made with the Chinese character written by Jikan for its motif.
