It depicts cargo boats dropping anchor off the coast of Shinagawa on the vermilion lacquered sake cup, using sprinkled metallic powders. The big guarded gate of Takanawa can be seen in the far distance. This gate was located at the boundary of Edo city along the side of Tōkaido road.
The creator of this piece is Hara Youyusai. He was an official Maki-e artist in the Doi family of the Koga Domain. He was also admired together with Koma Kansai.
