Tachibana Museum
Fukuoka-ken, Japan

This was originally a glittering wine cup decorated with maki-e (sprinkled metal design) and kanagai (sheets of gold and silver inlay). Unfortunately, kanagai on the sun and warbler are peeled off at present.

It bears a maki-e inscription of a 18th-century maki-e artist, Koma Koryu, on the exterior of the cup. The Koma family was official maki-e artists employed by the shogun family through generations. Therefore, this cup might be a gift from the shogun family.
