The Salar de Uyuni is an exceptional geological formation resulting from the gradual evaporation of a prehistoric lake called Lago Minchin. Eleven thousand (11 000) years ago this lake was about a hundred metres deep. Today, the Salar salt reserves are estimated at 10 billion tons. The constant winds sweeping the region, make it one of the flattest areas of the world.
