The salt cellar is composed of salt dish on three small legs on a three armed base. The legs in the form of twisted and intertwined snakes are of characteristic Empire form. A pair of salt cellars was made by domestic gold- and silversmith Juran Kunić (Georgius Kunich von Sonnenburg), a consummate craftsman whose products, shaped mostly in the spirit of Neoclassicism, were at a very high level in terms of craft and art. He was born in 1775 or 1776, arrived in Varaždin in 1796, and at once opened his own workshop. He was concerned with the making of chalices and liturgical vessels, secular silverware, and the making and repair of gold jewellery; in addition he was a court appraiser. He had a well developed workshop in which he employed many assistants. He died in Varaždin in 1831, his workshop being inherited by his goldsmith son Vincent.
