Exuberant, excessive decoration based on nature, with imaginary animals, caravels and mythological figures are typical of the Manueline, in which style this gilded silver salver was made. It was inherited by Brother Álvaro de São Boaventura (bishop, 1672 - 83) and in that same century was given the coat-of-arms of his successor João de Melo, who instructed that the piece be kept in the Cathedral.
