News correspondent & anchor Sam Donaldson tells stories of covering Jimmy Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign, including interactions between the press and Carter’s mother, Lillian:

“[A reporter] said, ‘Now, Miss Lillian, your son, Governor Carter is going around the country saying, “I’ll never lie to you.” Are you gonna tell me that he never told a lie in his life?’ Miss Lillian said, ’No, I don’t think he told -- he might’ve told a little white lie.’ ‘A ha,’ said the woman. ‘What’s the difference? Explain a white lie.’ Miss Lillian said, ‘Remember when you came in and I said how nice you looked and how glad I was to see you?’”
