Sampati (wood, pigment West Bengal) Sampati was one of two sons of Aruna, the charioteer of Surya, the sun.
He was the brother of Jatayu and lost his wings when he was a child. The two brothers would compete with each other to see who could fly higher and once Jatayu flew so high he was about to be seared by the Sun’s flames. Sampati saved Jatayu by shielding him but was injured instead. As a result Sampati lived wingless for the rest of his life.
Sampati was instrumental in the search for Sita as he was able to guide the others in the right direction.
