Miss King, the Kohrs’ governess, accompanied the family to Germany in 1880. There, she continued with the children’s English and music lessons, while they also learned German. The education of a proper young lady also included needlework. Anna Kohrs, 12 or 13 years old at the time, sewed this sampler. She may have learned the work from her governess, or from her mother, Augusta, who was an inspired needlewoman.
