Since the 1880's Sandycove Bather's Association has faithfully maintained Dublin's famous 'Forty Foot' diving spot in Dun Laoghaire. Famously in the first chapter of Joyce's 'Ulysses', characters Stephen and Buck Mulligan go for a swim in the 40-Foot bathing place, joined by an English academic called Haines, who is over in Dublin to study the Gaelic Revival and Irish literature.
