Sarangi is an instrument of Indian origin, with folk variants widely performed in several parts of India and Pakistan. The instrument is related to the Pinaki Veena and the Ravanhasta, mentioned in mythological texts. The Sarangi family is valued for its closeness to the human voice, and hence has been a primary accompaniment to vocal music. It became a standard accompaniment to Khayal and semi-classical genres of vocal music, however it gradually lost its place to the harmonium.
