From box coffins to mummiform coffins and skilfully wrapped mummies with masks made of cartonnage (layers of compact papyrusor linen) and mummy portraits – funerary practices were highly diverse. For over four thousand years, however, the beliefs on which they were based remained unchanged: that death opened up the way to everlasting life.
