Satsuma Kiriko cut glass was first created in Kagoshima during the Edo period. Satsuma Kiriko is made by cutting patterns into the thick layer of colored glass over transparent glass underneath. Gradation known as bokashi is applied to create designs of the unique Japanese aesthetic sense that can only be created through masterful cutting techniques. Satsuma Kiriko is an elaborate handicraft brimming with elegance and fine beauty.
