In a lush woodland setting with a palace and a garden with animals, Saul gives a lyre (rather than a harp) to David.
This tapestry has a deep border with allegorical figures among a rich foliate background. The allegories can probably be identified as Justice, Peace, Hope, Charity and Faith. The corners contain figures of the biblical heroines Judith and Rebecca at the upper corners and Susannah and Sarah at the lower ones.
To either side are a pelican and a swan respectively, feeding their young in an allusion to familial love. The references in this panel to fortitude and constancy in conjugal love may suggest that the principal figures are in fact Apollo and Orpheus rather than David and Saul.
