Prince-Elector Johann Wilhelm, a great lover of fine carvings made of ivory and valuable woods, hired a specialist in the field, namely Ignaz Elhafen, who arrived at the Düsseldorf court in 1704 following stints in Innsbruck, Vienna and Rome. This impressive showpiece, with its great variety of dynamic figures and true-to-life perspective, is one of his masterpieces. What is striking is that the actual motif is shown more in the background: Saul, who receives the call of God and is approached by a banderole coming out of the clouds which reads “Saule, Saule, quid me persequeris” (“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me”), is thrown from his horse. The composition is influenced by late 16th century Mannerism. As is typical of such carvings, the composition is informed by various 17th century prints. (Barbara Til)
