Scenes from the Life of Noah

Unknownabout 1250–1260

The J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

The well-known story of Noah and his ark dominates the series of scenes shown on this page. On the left side, angels come to Noah while he is asleep to tell him to build the ark, and below, Noah begins the work. In the two large central circles, Noah finishes the ark and a ramp is laid down to allow the animals to board. The three scenes on the right show Noah sending out a bird repeatedly to see if it can find land as the Great Flood subsides. The blue, pink, and gold colors in the rectangular frame also dominate in the individual scenes, with touches of red and green added for variety.
