The response to U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Henry Morgenthau, Sr., from New York philanthropist, Jacob H. Schiff. Within days, $50,000 was raised and sent to the Yishuv in Ottoman Palestine. With that fateful action, the mission of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) began to take shape.
