The etching is based on a portrait of Friedrich Schiller by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1804. The portrait shows the poet, who is greatly revered in Germany, without a trace of idealization. Horst Janssen was one of the most productive graphic artists of the 1950s and 60s. He illustrated many artists’ books and did numerous portraits of poets and writers. There are 20 graphic works by Janssen in Marcel Reich-Ranicki’s collection.
