In the year 1837, Leopold Sello, the head of the Royal Prussian Mining Authority in Saarbrücken, draw up an initial plan for accommodating the growing number of miners in Saarland. The unique building style of the sleeping quarters was quickly developed from a simple "sleeping shelter". This room in the sleeping quarters shows one variation with comfortable single beds. However, it is clear how little personal space the miners had away from work. Communal living, sleeping, cooking and washing in the tightest of spaces.
