Schwangau: Neuschwanstein Castle

1869/1884

Munich, Germany

Interior view, 3rd floor, bedroom with neo-Gothic furnishings and pictures of the legend of Tristan and Isolde.

This painting is a photochrome. Similar to a lithograph, the individual layers of color are printed separately and thus obtain their radiant colorfulness. A black-and-white photograph by the Bavarian court photographer Joseph Albert served as the model for the printing process. Albert photographed the interiors of Neuschwanstein Castle in 1886, the year King Ludwig II died; the prints were published in 1887. (Inventory number of the original photograph: Rara, ZI-022938)
Photochrom Zurich's photochroms, abbreviated P. Z., are often identified by a serial number followed by the letters P. Z. and a caption in gold letters.
