The first Hungarian-German-Hebrew reading book for the Jewish folk schools, written by Samuel Kohányi, was published in 1861. The book in the first few pages introduces pictures, words, and phrases associated with the modern world before the Hungarian reading comprehension texts starts. In the 1860s, the primary language used by Jews was German. Young intellectuals grouped around the Jewish Association for Hungarian Language made great efforts to spread the Hungarian language - with no little success. Since the book was published well before the birth of the modern Hebrew language, Hebrew terms are often missing.
