L.A, artist. framed watercolor portrait of 3M schooner WELAKA, sight 15-3/4" x 24"; frame 27" x 36. Generally thought of as coastal vessels, schooners did sometimes make much longer voyages. This smallish three-master, built and owned at Belfast, Maine, traveled into the Mediterranean several times in 1877 alone. The painting documents a storm, with the mizzen furled and fore and main sails reefed down. Another painting exists of Welaka, painted the same year by the same artist.
