Scientific cruise organized by the Revue Générale des Sciences [Journal of General Sciences]

The Revue Générale des Sciences, under the patronage of the French intellectual and scientific aristocracy of that time, started organizing scientific cruises in 1897. They were designed as study trips with conferences and library on board. A committee determined the destination and the trip itinerary. Each cruise had a scientific director –the name of Charles Diehl, a Byzantinist, comes up during different cruises in Greece and Turkey.
