In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, scrapbooks came into fashion: albums of personal collages with collectible images, engravings, sketches and other memorabilia. This scrapbook was probably compiled by Wilhelm Grohmann (1835–1918), a copperplate engraver and royal librarian at the Berlin Art Academy. A compendium of different media, it comprises copperplate engravings of Rome, Napoleon images, travel drawings and watercolours showing the Gulf of Naples.
