Sculptural ceramic ceremonial vessel that represents a man carrying a deer (right) ML031850

This ceramic sculptural bottle depicts a man carrying a deer. It is not the feline that attacks the deer, but a man that plays the role of the feline that captures the prey to be offered. This is a black piece, color that will be frequently used in funerary Chimu pottery. It has the arc handle, a shape that it is present in the ceremonial ceramic art of the northern coast of Peru since the Formative Period (1200 BC). A small monkey connects the peak of the bottle and the arc handle. The monkey is an animal related to the humid world, the region to the East of the Andes, the rainforest or Amazonian world. It is an animal that distributes seeds from the trees, this action creating a greater potential for vegetal growth. The monkey is an animal that is anatomically very similar to humans, and although it looks more like a dead man than one alive, his vivacity links him to the world of the living. The monkey qualifies as a liminal animal, one that stands in the line between different worlds, such as the world of the living and the world of the dead. (UH)

Esta botella escultórica de cerámica representa un hombre cargando a un venado. En este caso, en vez de ser el felino que ataca, es el ser humano de alto rango el que captura a la presa que será ofrecida. Esta es una pieza de color negro, color que va a ser usado de manera masiva en el arte Chimú para la cerámica funeraria. Tiene el asa en forma de arco, forma que está presente en el arte ceremonial cerámico de la costa norte del Perú desde la Época Formativa. En la unión del pico con el asa en forma de arco hay un pequeño mono. El mono es un animal vinculado al mundo de la humedad, al mundo de la vertiente oriental de los Andes o mundo amazónico. Es un animal que distribuye las semillas desde los árboles y esto genera mayor posibilidad de crecimiento. Es un animal que está muy cercano al ser humano en su anatomía, y si bien se parece más a un ser humano muerto que a uno vivo, su vivacidad lo vincula al mundo de los vivos. El mono califica como animal liminal, es decir, un animal que vincula mundos diferentes, como el de los vivos y los muertos. (UH)
