Seoul, South Korea

The outstanding craftsmanship in bronze technique and casting is evident in the Buddhist sculptures and ritual vessels made during the Goryeo Dynasty. The seated Amitabha Buddha is the central figure in Pure Land Buddhism, symbol of eternal light and longevity. His hands assume Vitarka mudra, the symbolic gesture of appeasement associated with Buddha Amitabha. The characteristic feature of this image is the way the monastic robe covers both shoulders. The additional detail of the ornament attached to the Buddha’s upper robe under the left chest is a traditional feature of Goryeo Buddhist sculptures.
