Unknown9th century

Art Gallery of New South Wales

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

This seated Buddha with elongated proportions and defined facial features dates to around the 9th century and is stylistically from the Central Javanese period, drawing its influences from Buddhist images produced in Southern India around Amaravati and continuing at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. Stylistic features which suggest this influence include the slender body and elongated face, the drape of the robe worn in the 'open mode', the subtle modelling of the 'ushnisha' and the characteristic mark of 'urma' at the centre of the forehead.
