For all his grief at what had been lost, the artist was never short of "Nuremberg Wit." This "Wimmelbild" – a "teeming picture" packed with lively detail – was made in the summer of 1946 and speaks with pure "joie de vivre". Many people had not survived the bombardments. Yet that background only served to intensify the survivors' joy at being free and able to enjoy a life without air raids. Though ruins are clearly visible in the background, life is stirring again. Bomb craters served as swimming pools in the summer of 1946. People made the most of conditions as they were. In spite of everything, life returned to the city.
