Raised alone by the chilean artist Jorge Selarón, the staircase at Joaquim Silva Street that link Lapa to Santa Teresa has become one of Rio's icons. Made from tiles in the colors of the brazilian flag in its 125 meters long, it was called "The Great Madness" by the artist that used to dedicated himself exclusively to finish the work started in 1990s. After finishing the 215 steps of ladder, Selarón dedicated to work in the surrounding reaching put more than 2,000 tiles from all over the world. As the artist used to say, the work would only be ready on the day of his death, a fact that occurred in 2013.
