"The two student works (accession numbers D0073 and P051) demonstrate the artist’s intent and his serious approach: the drawing carefully picks out the forms, their arrangement in the composition, the light and shade and use of colour, all using painting. These academic exercises are produced in the studio of the French artist André Lhote (1885–1962), during his study visit to France. The two works are of more
than just museum interest, demonstrating careful artistic practice and application and pointing to the important achievements that would develop fully in the years to come: symmetrical composition, synthesis of form and economy of colour."
