Serpentine Gallery Pavilions: Annual Architectural Commissions and Public Programmes

The timber-clad structure for the 2007 Pavilion resembled a spinning top and brought a dramatic vertical dimension to the traditional single-level pavilion. A wide, spiralling ramp made two complete turns, allowing visitors to ascend from the Gallery’s lawn to the highest point for views across Kensington Gardens as well as a bird’s eye view of the space below. Olafur Eliasson’s deep-rooted interest in spatial questions led to his increasing engagement with architecture and to his collaboration with Thorsen on a number of projects, including the National Opera House, Oslo. The 2007 Pavilion was an experimental next step for this fruitful creative partnership.

  • Serpentine Gallery Experiment Marathon, 13 -14 October 2007: Olafur Eliasson together with Hans Ulrich Obrist convened the Serpentine Gallery Experiment Marathon, the second in the Serpentine's acclaimed series of Marathon events. This event blurs the boundaries of art and science and creates a laboratory of experience. A huge variety of experiments explored perception, artificial intelligence, the body and language, and took place in and around the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007 designed by Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen. The 2007 Pavilion had been conceived as a laboratory for experimentation and invention with artists, architects, academics and scientists presenting ‘hand-held’ or ‘table-top’ experiments throughout the weekend. The Experiment Marathon built on the enormous success of the Serpentine Gallery 24-Hour Interview Marathon in 2006, which featured interviews with 64 leading cultural figures including Brian Eno, Gilbert & George, Zaha Hadid, Damien Hirst and Doris Lessing, and was conducted by Serpentine Gallery Co-Director of Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of International Projects, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and architect of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006, Rem Koolhaas. Participants included: Marina Abromović, Benjamin Aranda, Fia Backström, John Baldessari, Simon Baron-Cohen, Olaf Blanke, Polly Brannan, John Brockman, Spartacus Chetwynd, Gill Clarke, Marcus Coates, Peter Cook, Colin Dancer, Paul Drew, Olafur Eliasson, Tim Etchells, Sophie Fiennes, Simone Forti, Gloria Friedmann, Paul Fryer, Kim Gordon, Joseph Grigley, Roger Hiorns, Steve Jones, Marcy Kahan, Chris Lasch, Armand Leroi, R Beau Lotto, Jonas Mekas, Gustav Metzger, Bridget Nicholls, Steven Pinker, Irene Revell, Pedro Reyes, Israel Rosenfield, Tomas Saraceno, Angela Sirigu, Andreas Slominski, Luc Steels, Seirian Sumner, Timothy Taylor, Neil Turok, Oscar Vilarroya, Francesca Von Habsburg, Tris Vonna-Michell, Lewis Wolpert, Cerith Wyn Evans.
