Serra do Marão

The landscapes of the Serra do Marão are a recurrent theme in the work of the painter Joaquim Lopes. Strong brushstrokes compose the various mountainous elevations and the patches of the different parts, with their limits being accentuated with rows of trees and vegetation formed by vertical lines. Resorting to the use of different tones and a profuse intersection of lines and overlapping grounds, a visual convergence is achieved that confers upon the composition a notion of perspective that heightens the game of contrasts, giving the work a much greater depth.
The geometrical marks left by the brushstrokes, drawn in violet tones, embrace a small village surrounded by fields whose division is marked by the different grounds of colour, resulting in a patchwork of green and yellow tones, punctuated by dark volumes of trees.
