Helen Allinghamcirca 1889

Art Gallery of New South Wales

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

Although this watercolour faithfully records an actual scene, the figure was painted in the artist’s Surrey studio where Helen Allingham posed and dressed up her models (often imported from London) in old-fashioned rustic costumes. Young women and girls were Allingham’s favourite figures. Boys were considered too boisterous for the artist’s idyllic scenes of quaint old cottages and country flower gardens.
