Shadow game entitled 'The Bending Suffragette'. Comprising a piece of card with two contrasting representations of a 'suffragette', printed one on top of the other. Above the card is a sheet of thin, lined paper, . As the card is bent the top image disappears bringing the second image to the fore.Whilst one image depicts the suffragette as a feminine woman, the other depicts the Suffragette as a shrieking woman wearing a 'Votes for Women' straw boater. This novelty souvenir would have been sold for one penny (1d) by London's street traders or small shops. The manufacturer of this item, Duo Advertising, produced a range of similar shadow games depicting topical and popular issues in the early years of the 20th century. Satirical games and postcards depicting Suffragettes as unwomanly, shrieking harridans were very popular with cynical Londoners who became increasingly irritated by Suffragette militancy and its disruption to London's public life.
