Sharpitor, is a granite rock formation. Dartmoor is known for its tors, these tors are hills topped with outcrops of bedrock, and these are usually rounded boulder-like formations. William Widgery was a self-taught artist, as a young man he trained as a stone mason. Upon moving to Exeter he took up painting in his spare time, teaching himself by studying the work of Lanseer and Bonheur. Many of his paintings are of Dartmoor which he loved.
