In this painting of animals, a ewe, a lamb and a goat are represented in a landscape scenery. The picture had already been the subject of studies made in a natural setting, but this final work was in fact painted in the studio.
In the foreground are a lamb with a white fleece, accompanied by a ewe with a yellowish fleece, both of them represented in profile, with their noses facing towards the right of the composition. On the left side is a brown-haired goat lying on the ground, with its nose facing left.
The three animals are inserted in a poetic landscape, with a rock placed on the right, together with some vegetation in contrasting dark tones. The field of vision is extended on the left of the painting, stretching out towards a flock of sheep in the distance, marked by thin white brushstrokes, standing out distinctively in the midst of a vast green field. The flat horizon announces a sky of lilac and pink hues.
The lighting of the picture is concentrated in the sky and on the sheep, contributing to a more naturalistic style of painting, and affording the work a more balanced light.
