Jerome Kern (1885-1945) composed for musical theater and also popular songs. He is one of the most revered of early 20th century Broadway composers, and is remembered for songs such as "Ol Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man" from 1927's "Show Boat," which is still considered his most popular creation. Kern is credited with modernizing early the earlier waltz music typical of the late 19th century with a 4/4 beat, much easier to dance to. He also incorporated later musical styles, such as ragtime, into his tunes.
