During the 20th century, musical theater held sway over much of the popular music that Americans enjoyed at home. From the Ziegfield Follies of the 1920s to Rogers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music" in 1959, to later extravaganzas such as "Ragtime" and "The Lion King," American musical productions lent music lovers some of their favorite songs. Even though radio and recordings helped popularize the tunes, Sheet music allowed those with a piano, or other instrument, to play their own version of a favorite. The sheet music also reveals original cast members and usually echos the official poster designs for many of the productions.
