In July 1943, whilst undertaking a degree in Modern Languages (French and German) at Aberdeen University, Sheila was recruited for Bletchley Park where she was assigned to the Naval Section as a cryptanalyst. Her main work was on decoding enemy coastal battery signals but she later catalogued captured German documents.

Sheila met her husband, Oliver Lawn, at Bletchley Park. Oliver, a brilliant mathematician who had been recruited by Gordon Welchman, worked in Hut 6 where German Army and Air Force Enigma codes were broken.
