This is a breastplate made up beads of the marine mollusk shell Spondylus sp. The ornaments of the elites of ancient Peru were made of materials that were not easily accessible to ordinary people. These show the exclusive access that the elites had to prestige goods. This is the case of the tropical seas shells, Strombus sp. and Spondylus sp. which had great symbolic importance in the Andean world as they were species related to the water cycle and the El Niño phenomenon, which periodically affects the central-Andean territory.
